♯new ♯2019checklist ♯indierock ♯folk ♯singersongwriter ♯alternative All the typical Andrew Bird hallmarks (whistling, literary allusions, thesaurus tangents, 1970's classic rock instrumentals) 'My Finest Work Yet' is a boisterous, interesting album. Don't get wrong, I liked it, but the album cover-- blergh, a parody of David's "The Death of Marat" reeks of pretentiousness. Portraying himself as the murdered Jacobin leader/journalist Marat-- does Bird think his topical lyrics will invoke a response of his own Charlotte Corday to appear and murder him? Like he's some kind of truth-speaking martyr of indie music? It's a bit much.
